Two months after the first census of the new Republic of Ireland was taken, the people of Cork turned out in their thousands for another first

Corkonians organised and took part in Cork’s first procession through the streets with the Blessed Sacrament.

The Eucharist Procession on June 6, 1926 saw tens of thousands of participants. It was initiated by local businessmen and Bishop Daniel Cohalan in the aftermath of the War of Independence and Civil War to unite the community in prayer and to heal social divisions.

One hundred years on, Bishop Fintan Gavin will carry the Blessed Sacrament from the Cathedral through the same streets and will lead the people of Cork and beyond in this year’s prayers for peace and healing and a renewed devotion to the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Eucharist.

The 2026 Eucharistic Procession is on Sunday June 7th - the Feast of Corpus Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ).
