Fr. O’Donovan collapsed shortly after arriving at St. Finbarr’s College, Farranferris for the annual diocesan retreat. He died three hours later. He was aged 70.
He was a nephew of the brothers, Fr’s. John Kearney, P.P., Ardfield(1906-1936) and Thomas Kearney, P.P., Kilmeen(1906-1918).

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork presided at Office and Solemn Requiem Mass celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Barrett P.P. V.G., Clonakilty; deacon was Fr. Thomas McGrath C.C., Clonakilty and the sub-deacon was Very Rev. Patrick O’Donovan P.P. Rath; Very Rev. Patrick E. Collins Adm. Skibbereen, was the master of ceremonies.
