Canon Walsh was educated and ordained in Cork, his collegiate training took place at St. Mary’s Seminary under the presidency of the Right Rev. Dr. England – first Bishop of Charleston, North Carolina.
He was appointed Canon of the newly-established Cathedral Chapter on the 23/2/1858.

His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Delany, Bishop of Cork was the celebrant of the Solemn Requiem Mass. The deacon was, Fr. Jeremiah Cummins, C.C., St. Finbarr’s South; sub-deacon was, Fr. John Walsh, C.C., Dunmanway, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Jeremiah O’Connell, C.C., St. Finbarr’s South.
