Illness during the early years of his priesthood left him almost totally deaf. Thereafter his priestly career was confined to chaplaincies.
Fr O’Connell took an active part in the language movement and was one of the last surviving member of the committee which founded Colaiste na Mumham, Ballingeary, Co. Cork
He was a brother of Very Rev. Patrick Canon O’Connell, P.P. (Enniskeane, 1918-1946), a nephew of Very Rev. Patrick Canon O’Connell, P.P.(Ovens, 1893-1934), and a cousin of Very Rev. John Vincent Hurley, P.P.(1939-1946)

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception (The Lough). The celebrant of the Mass was, Very Rev. Denis Canon Murphy, P.P., Church of the Immaculate Conception; deacon was, Fr. Jerome O’Leary, Poor Clares; sub-deacon was, Fr. Jim Byrne, C.C., Caheragh, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Daniel J. Donovan, C.C., Church of the Immaculate Conception.
