Towards the end of his ecclesiastical studies in Maynooth he left to join the Jesuits in whose novitiate he spent over a year. However, through ill-health he was obliged to leave and return to Maynooth.
It should be noted that both he and Fr. Denis Crowley, also a Bandon native, died on the same day. Both funerals were conducted simultaneously in Bandon.

Obituary
Very Rev. Denis Canon McSwiney, P.P., V.G., Bandon presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr. Thomas Magner, C.C., Bandon; deacon was, Fr. Thomas Murray, Chaplain, Bon Secours Convent; sub-deacon was, Fr. Thomas Tierney, St. Finbarr’s Seminary, Farranferris, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Jeremiah O’Hea, C.C., Bantry.
