Notes
While a curate in Skibbereen, he instituted a choral society, and secured the services of a competent instructor to teach the members. He started a brass band, and to such a degree of musical perfection did he bring its members that Father McCarthie’s Brass Band, was for years one of the best in Munster.
The circumstances of his retiring from Skibbereen in 1874 were due to the appointment by Bishop Michael O’Hea of Fr. Peter Hill – some years his junior, to be Administrator (Skibbereen). He offered his resignation in a fit of pique to the Bishop who accepts it. He goes to America, ailing from Queenstown (Cobh) on the 27/5/1875. Between the years 1881-1892, he was Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., and Professor at Seton Hall College (now University), South Orange, N.J., USA.
