The death occurred on October 1st, 1998 unexpectedly of Fr Michael C. Cahalane, Parish Priest of Watergrasshill, Co Cork. Fr Cahalane died in a Dublin hospital where he was undergoing heart surgery. He was 68.
He was a native of Drinagh, in Drimoleague parish, and was ordained for the Dioceses of Cork in 1953 following studies at St. Patrick’s College Carlow.
His first appointment took him on temporary mission to the Diocese of Ferns.
In September 1957, he was appointed Curate to the South Parish in Cork City, a post he held until July 1962 when he was appointed Curate at Tracton Abbey (Minane Bridge).
From 1968 to 1985 he served terms as Chaplain to St. Finbarr’s Hospital, and as curate in Gurranabraher and Bandon parishes.
He was appointed Parish Priest in September 1985 and assigned to the parish of Muintir Bhaire in West Cork where he served for three years. Fr Cahalane was appointed Parish Priest of Uibh Laoire in August 1988 and transferred to Watergrasshill/Glenville as Parish Priest in 1993 where he served until he died.
