He belonged to a family who gave many members to the Church. His younger brother, Fr. Michael Molony, C.C., Rosscarbery predeceased him in 1864. His uncles were, Very Rev. Jeremiah Molony, P.P., Aghabullogue (Diocese of Cloyne), and , Very Rev. Jeremiah E. Molony, P.P., Roscarbery (1836-1850).
He was responsible for the building of the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Barryroe – the solemn dedication took place in the Spring of 1871. With the opening of this new church the two old chapels of Lislevane and Butlerstown were closed.

Obituary
His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Fitzgerald, Bishop of Ross, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr Timothy G. O’Hea C.C.,Rosscarbery ; deacon was, Fr. John Kearney C.C., Kilmeen; sub-deacon was, Fr. Thomas Kearney C.C., Cape Clear, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Peter. Hill P.P., Barryroe.
