His brother Daniel – ordained a priest on the 9/6/1838, volunteered for misionary service in India under Dr. John Fennelly, vicar-apostolic of Madras. In 1845 Rome agreed to Dr. Fennelly’s request for Daniel as his coadjutor bishop. On the 11th October, 1846, in St. John the Baptist Church, Kinsale, Co. Cork, he was consecrated Bishop of Hyderabad, India by Most Rev. John Murphy, Bishop of Cork. In 1864 owing to ill-health and went to Australia. He was appointed Bishop of Hobart, Tasmania on the 6/5/1866. He died at Low Head, Tasmania on the 29/12/1907 and was buried at Hobart, Tasmania .
He was a grand uncle of the brothers; Very Rev. Arthur Murphy-O’Connor, P.P., Gurranabraher (1969-1975) & Very Rev. Joseph Canon Murphy-O’Connor, P.P., Farranree (1970-1981). He was a cousin of Very Rev. Eugene McSwiney, P.P., Enniskeane.
His great grand nephew, Very Rev. Kerry Murphy, P.P., Turners Cross currently serves in the Diocese.
