He was a member of a well-known clerical family. He was one of three brothers who became priests – Joseph & Donal (Donal was also ordained at the Bon Secours Chapel in 1928) . He also had six nephews who were ordained to the priesthood, namely: Bishop Cormac Murphy-O’Connor (now Cardinal of Westminister Diocese), Mgr. Patrick Murphy-O’Connor, Brian Murphy-O’Connor, Jerome Murphy-O’Connor, O.P., Kerry Murphy-O’Connor, and Lawrence O’Shea O.F.M.

He was the First Parish Priest at Farranree.
