DEVOTION TO BLESSED VIRGIN
If one sought the motivating force behind all he (Canon O’Brien) did and said, one had not far to seek, for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin literally shone from him. During his Presidency of the Cork C.Y.M.S., he was closely connected with the formation of the Federation of the Catholic Young Men’s Society of Ireland, and he was later responsible for the consecretation of the Federation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The same great force lay behind another lasting memorial to his work in Cork. This was the introduction of the Crusade of the Miraculous Medal in St. Finbarr’s Church when he was Administrator there. This particular devotion had been brought to Cork some time earlier by the Vincentian Fathers and when Canon O’Brien threw himself behind the Crusade the results were remarkable. He visited practically all the imporant shrines of Our Lady in Europe in pre-war days and was spiritual director of many big pilgrimages, notably to Lourdes, and leader of other small parties to lesser known places of special devotion.
