His first appointment, after ordination, was to Watergrasshill, however, he changed with Fr. Thomas Palmer for Muintir Bhaire (Durrus).
In May 1870, during his time as curate in Glounthaune he was sent to America with Fr. Michael B. Buckley, Adm. Ss. Peter & Pauls, to collect funds for the Cork Cathedral. A sum of ?5,000 was collected during that mission.
Appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1878.

Obituary
His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. O’Callaghan, Bishop of Cork, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Glanmire. The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr. John Russell, C.C., Glanmire; deacon was, Fr. Timothy Murphy, C.C., Durrus; sub-deacon was, Fr. Charles A. Walsh, C.C., Clontead, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Martin Murphy, C.C., Cathedral.
