By special dispensation he was ordained at the early age of 21.
While attached to the Good Shepherd Convent, and when the Egyptian War (1882) broke out he volunteered to go as one of the chaplains to the British troops. He was present at all the principal actions in the campaign, from the bombardment of Alexandria to the taking of Tel-el-Kebir, and celebrated Mass on the battlefield. In November, 1882, he came to Cork for a brief visit, and then he resumed his duties as chaplain at the Army headquarters of Aldershot and Dartmouth.

Obituary
The Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Garrison Chapel (Aldershot), where the coffin was laid out in front of the altar, covered with the large flag of the Union Jack, the medal and cross which he received for his services in the Egyptian War.
The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr. Riordan, Portsmouth; deacon was, Canon Horan, Portsmouth; sub-deacon was, Fr. Gaughran, Woking, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Bellard, Senior Chaplain Armed Forces.
