In 1849, the present day Diocese of Ross became an independant Diocese, having been united with the Diocese of Cloyne since 1748. After 1849, some of the priests in the Diocese of Ross might have some of their clerical ministry working in parishes in what are now part of the present day Diocese of Cloyne. For instance, we find Fr. Beausang as a curate in Mitchelstown (1847-1850) – a parish in the present day Cloyne Diocese, prior to his appointment at Curate in Skibbereen (1850).
now part of the present-day Diocese of Cloyne .
‘It has been announced that the Rev. Mr. Beausang was going to Canada on a collecting mission for the Catholic University. A meeting of the inhabitants of Clonakilty was held on Tuesday evening (15/3/1864) at Donovan’s Hotel, Mr Roche, manager of the National Bank was in the chair, for the purpose of presenting him with an address and testimonial of his departure. A subscription list was opened and subscriptions were arranged to be received at the National Bank. We understand a similar movement is about being made in Skibbereen where Mr. Beausang was stationed for many years. We are sure the admiration of the Rev. gentleman’s public and private character, and the general sympathy in the laborious mission he has undertaken, will cause this testimonial to be worthy of the occasion’ – Cork Examiner 17/3/1864.
His return to Ireland in 1867 was brief, in 1868 he again left the Diocese, having transferred his allegiance to Dr. John Walsh , Bishop of Sandwich (present-day Diocese of London), Canada.
