As was the custom of the time, like many newly ordained priests of the Cork Diocese, he was obliged to seek temporary mission outside the diocese. Having studied the Welsh language (part of his Celtic Studies at Maynooth) he opted for Wales, but because he signed his application for travel in Irish he had some problem with his passport due to the war restrictions then prevailing. For that reason he spent only a few months in Cardiff.
