At a meeting of the Irish Hierarchy on Tuesday (16th October 1928) in Maynooth, Rev. John O’Neill, MA (NUI), PhD (Chicago) was appointed to the Chair of Ancient Classics – Southern Star, October 20, 1928.
After ordination he went to the University of Chicago to persue his wrk on the ancient classics. While there he took part in an archaeological expedition to Greece and the Holy Land. He obtained the PhD degree at the University of Chicago on a work published by him on ancient Corinth.
During the year 1927-1928 he lectured in Ancient Classics in theUniversity of Illinois.
