Most Rev. Denis Kelly, was born near Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, on 12 January, 1852, and was educated at Ennis and Paris. He was appointed president of the Killaloe Diocesan College in 1890, and was consecrated Bishop of Ross on 9 May, 1897.
He was consecrated bishop by Archbishop Thomas William Croke after whom Croke Park is named. Bishop Kelly consecrated Bishop Joseph (Ignatius) Shanahan, native of Co Tipperary, the Holy Ghost Father who is known as the “Apostle of Nigeria”.
Bishop Kelly acted on several Royal commissions, and in 1911 was named one of the two commissioners for the projected Home Rule finance.
