Notes
Health reasons, forced him on a number of occasions to take sick leave, which may explain the absence of appointments prior to 1849 and between 1864 and 1867.

He was a nephew of the brothers; Very Rev. Daniel McSweeney, P.P., V.F., Bandon (1820-1845) and Very Rev. Dr. Patrick McSweeney, President of the Irish College, Paris (1828-1860).

Appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1874
Appointed Vicar Forane (V.F.) of the Banon Deanery in 1878.
Appointed Vicar General of the Diocese in 1890.
Appointed Dean of the Diocese in 1890.
Appointed Papal Prelate with title of Monsignor in 1896.

As Parish Priest of Carrigaline he was instrumental in the building of St. Brigid’s Church, Crosshaven to replace the chapel at Myrtleville, built some eighty years previously. The dedication of the new church took place on Sunday, June 29th, 1873.

During his period in Carrigaline the Presentation Sisters came to Crosshaven in 1876 and the building of the convent commenced shortly afterwards. The convent was completed in 1879, however, Canon McSweeeney had been moved to Bandon in 1878.

While in Bandon, he had the flights of stone steps leading to St. Patrick’s Church erected.
Mention might also be made that the failure of the Munster Bank occurred while he was stationed in Bandon, and it was but characteristic of him that he laboured with zeal and at great personal sacrifice to lighten the burden that befell the depositors, and to have the bank reconstructed on a sound basis.
