He was a nephew of Very Rev. Fr. Denis Bernard, P.P., Murragh & Templemartin (1905-1935)and a cousin of Fr. John Bernard, C.C., Goleen (1917).
He was a grand-uncle of Very Rev. Bernard Cotter, P.P. – currently serving in the diocese.
During his appointment as Ovens CC he was responsible for the building of the outdoor Marian Grotto at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farran. Likewise, he was responsible for the building of the outdoor Marian Grotto in Glanmire.
Canon Bernard had many friends in the greyhound world and in his earlier days raced dogs with a fair measure of success under the pseudonym of “T. P. McCarthy”.

Most Rev. Dr. Ml. Murphy, Coadjutor Bishop of Cork and Ross, presided at the Concelebrated Requiem Mass. Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork and Ross, was also present. The chief concelebrant of the Requiem Mass was Very Rev. P. Canon Fullam, P.P., The Lough.
