He received his early education at the Carmelite College, Kinsale, and later at Carolina Seminary, Cork. Carolina was a house on a seven-acre holding on the McOstrich Estate in the Middle Glanmire Road, Cork, which Fr. William McCullough acquired in January 1881, to serve as a House of Residence for eccleciastical students attending St. Finbarr’s Seminary, Patrick’s Hill, Cork- cf. O’Donovan, C.C., St. Finbarr’s, was deacon; Fr. John Murphy, C.C., Ballingeary, was sub-deacon; Fr. Richard J. Barrett, C.C., St. Mary’s Cathedral, Cork, was master of ceremonies.
