Obituary
The death occurred unexpectedly on 31st October, 1991 of Fr. John McCarthy, at the age of 61.
A native of Newcestown Parish, Fr. McCarthy was ordained in 1955. After ordination, he went on temporary mission to the Archdiocese of Birmingham in England for two years. On his return to Cork, he was appointed as Assistant Curate at Ballingeary and in 1959 as Curate in Muintir Bhaire (Kilcrohane). He was transferred to Ballinspittle as Curate in 1962, where he served for seven years. From there, he moved to Kealkill, and in 1979, he became Curate at Carraig na bhFear.
Just over six years ago, he was appointed Parish Priest at Kilbrittain where he remained until his untimely death.
In all the parishes where he served, Fr. McCarthy had a deep involvement in the Gaelic Athletic Association, being particularly involved in the training of under-age teams. His devotion to Our Lady was widely recognised and he was a frequent pilgrim to the shrine at Lourdes.
He is especially mourned by the members of his family and a large circle of relatives and friends.
