He was a brother of Very Rev. Canon James O’Leary, P.P., Dunmanway, and a relative of Very Rev. John Canon Lyons, P.P., V.F., Kinsale.
In Carrig na bhFear he was the first to establish an agricultural bank under the auspices of the Department, and this resulted in much benefit to the small farmers and cottiers.
On his return to his native parish (Uibh Laoire) – being a fluent Irish language speaker, he took a great interest in the Irish Training College at Béal Ath,n Ghaorthaigh (Ballingeary).
