Prior to 1848, St. Patrick’s was a Chapel-of-Ease for the Cathedral. In 1848 Bishop Delany created the Parish of St. Patrick’s, Lower Road, Cork.
He was appointed Canon of the newly-established Cathedral Chapter on the 23/2/1858.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Delany, Bishop of Cork presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant was, Very Rev. George Sheehan, P.P., V.G., St. Patrick’s; deacon was, Fr. James Lehane, C.C., Blackrock; sub-deacon was, Fr. Thomas Burke, C.C., St. Patricks, and the masters of the ceremonies were, Fr. Patrick Hurley, C.C., Cathedral, and Fr.
