On his return home from Freiburg University he was appointed as the first chaplain to the Poor Clare Community – then recently established in Cork.
Rathcullen, Templemartin, Co. Cork, where he was born and where he died, is a place of interest as being the traditional birth-place of St. Finbarr – Patron of the Diocese of Cork.
He was the first to undertake the writing of a Catholic history of the Diocese of Cork – Very Rev. Patrick Canon Cahalane, P.P., Kilmurry (1959-1963) was later to take up where Fr. Murphy left off.
