He was ordained a member of the Franciscan Community, but in 1854 he was affiliated to the Diocese of Cork.
In May 1868, because of failing health, he was obliged to go to Australia. After some years he was able to return to Cork, and again resume his duties.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. O’Callaghan, Bishop of Cork, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass at the Cathedral. The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr. Denis O’Flynn, Chaplain, Good Shepherd Convent; deacon was, Fr. Thomas Magner, C.C., Cathedral; sub-deacon was, Fr. David Stack, C.C., Cathedral, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Martin Murphy, C.C., Cathedral.
