Today at the Cathedral fo St. Mary and St. Anne, Cork, Cllr John Sheehan, Lord Mayor of Cork, Bishop Paul Colton of the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, and Bishop Fintan Gavin greeting all people at home and away for St. Patrick’ s Day.
This is the text of Bishop Fintan’s greeting:
Today I greet you the people of Cork city and county, from all parts of the diocese of Cork and Ross and beyond as we celebrate our patron, St Patrick, who brought the gift of Christian faith to so many parts of our country almost 1,600 year ago. This faith has sustained us throughout our history in good times and in difficult times.
Patrick was an exile, a migrant and a missionary. When we look at his life through the account he left us in his own confessions we see that the darkest moments of his life proved to be the most life-giving both for himself and for the people in the land of his captivity – Ireland.
His message for us at this difficult and challenging time is a message of hope – of a God who is with us, whom we can turn to especially in these testing and dark times.
On St Patrick’s Day we celebrate what’s best in our Irish tradition which has its roots in our Christian faith. We are known for our generosity, our sense of community, our Christian solidarity of looking out for our neighbour in need, especially the sick, the weak and vulnerable.
Today more than ever we are being asked to live and share these values with one another. We must remain hopeful, knowing that with God, working together with each other we will overcome these challenges.
We remember those who are suffering with the coronavirus or who are in self-isolation. We pray for our doctors, nurses, chaplains and healthcare staff.
We invoke our God to be close to us at this time as we prayer a verse of St Patrick’s Breastplate: –
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
