Archbishop Patrick Coveney ordained John Guirey as a permanent deacon for the diocese on Sunday 14th October in the Church of Mary, Mother of God, Ballygarvan. It was a great day of celebration for the Guirey family and for the parish of Ballinhassig.
Following the completion of his four year preparation course, John, was called to ordination and the Director of the Permanent Diaconate, Canon Bertie O’Mahony, gave the testimony as to his preparedness for ordination.
The music for the ceremony was led by the parish choir, drawn from the parish’s three churches under the direction of Celine Garvey Desmond. The organist was Tom Ryan and the Cantor was Henrietta O’Meara.
All enjoyed a wonderful celebration in the Marian Hall afterwards facilitated by the Parish Assembly.
Rev. John was presented with an Alb by Mary O’Halloran, Parish Secretary. Chairperson of the Parish Assembly, Máire Uí Shé, presented him with Three Deacon’s Stoles.
A beautiful cake, made by local girl Niamh Deasy, topped off a truly great day for Rev. John and his family, for the parish and the diocese.
