He was a nephew of Very Rev. John Murphy, P.P., Drimoleague (1887-1897), a brother of Fr. Wm. McCarthy, C.C., Inchigeela(1892-1894) (whom he succeded as Curate at Kilbrittain), a cousin of Fr. Eugene Murphy, C.C., Clontead(1900-1902), and of Very Rev. Robert Burts, P.P., Monkstown (1939-1945).
At Glounthaune he took an active part in the fight for the rights of tenant farmers.
As Parish Priest of Passage West, he took a deep interest in the Catholic Young Men?s Society (C.Y.M.S.), and was instrumental in making it the success it was in Passage West.

Obituary
His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Cohalan, Bishop of Cork, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant of the Mass was, Fr. Robert J. Burts, P.P., Monkstown (cousin); deacon was, Fr. Daniel J. McCarthy, C.C., Haulbowline; sub-deacon was, Fr. Tadhg O’Murchu, Colaiste Barra, Farranferris and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Richard J. Barrett, C.C., St. Mary’s Cathedral, Cork.
