He was a brother of Fr. Daniel O’Donovan, C.C. (Ballincollig)
While preaching during the Mass he was celebrating on Sunday, 28/4/1929 he was taken suddenly ill and remained unconscious until he died(29/4/1929).
He was a very active figure in the Land League agitation, and while in Bandon he took a prominent part in bringing about the land purchase in the Sir John Arnott estate.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Cohalan, Bishop of Cork, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant of the Mass was, Very Rev. Timothy Canon O’Leary , P.P. Glounthaune; deacon was, Fr. Daniel J. Horgan, C.C., St. Joseph’s, Mayfield; sub-deacon was, Fr. A. Coffey, C.C, Ballingarry, Co. Limerick, and the master of ceremonies was, Fr. Richard J. Barrett, C.C., Cathedral.
