He was an older brother of Fr. Laurence Callanan, C.C., Ringaskiddy (1937-1944), who predeceased him by 4 days.
He was also a cousin of Very Rev. Jeremiah Canon Fehily, P.P., Ss. Peter & Paul’s (1939-1962) and Very Rev. John Canon Crowley, P.P., Bandon (1962-1967).
During the Great War (1914-1918)he acted as chaplain to the British and American ships in Cork Harbour (Spike Island), and he was exceedinly popular both with the men and the senior officers.
