From his time in Rath and the Islands, he developed an abiding interest in the welfare of fishermen and championed their cause on many occasion’s. For his work on behalf of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (R.N.L.I.), he was made an honorary life member of the Institute.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork and Ross, presided at the Concelebrated Requiem Mass. The chief celebrant was, Very Rev. J. Lambe, P.P., Gortnahoe, Thurles, Co. Tipperary (cousin), and Rt. Rev. Mgr. John Barrett, P.P., V.G., Clonakilty; Very Rev. J. Bergin, P.P., Templetouhy, Thurles, Co. Tipperary; Very Rev. Florence O’Flynn, P.P., Kilmichael and Fr. Ml. O’Riordan, C.C., Glenville were the co-concelebrants.
