Canon Hegarty was an uncle of Rev. Dr. Edward J. Hegarty, C.C., Ballyphehane (1961-1968) who died on 24/3/1968 on the Aer Lingus plane crash off the Tuskar Rock lighthouse (Wexford).

Canon Hegarty had an abiding interest in the sport of Rugby. He followed Ireland’s Triple Crown teams at Twickenham, Cardiff and Murrayfield, and will be remembered as the celebrant of the Sunday Mass on the inward bound Fishguard – Cork boat.
