Fr. O’Carroll was born in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny. He came from a great hurling family. he himself won two county medals with his native village and his brother Tom, played with the famous Kilkenny team of the early 1930, who had two replays with Cork in the All-Ireland final of 1931. He regularly refereed Gaelic Athletic games in West Cork

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork and Ross, presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass. The celebrant of the Mass was, Rt. Rev. Monsignor John Barrett, P.P., V.G.; deacon was, Very Rev.
