Fr. Keogh was very well known through the diocese and beyond for his dynamic and colourful style of preaching.
Fr. Keogh was born in Youghal and served for a time as a member of the Garda Siochana before training for the priesthood at St. Patrick’s College, Carlow. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1961 for Southwark Diocese in London, England.
Fr. Keogh’s early years as a priest were spent in England where he became well known as a mission preacher. He also served for a time as chaplain to Brixton prison where his work included ministering to people condemned on death row.
After his time in England, he returned to Ireland and was active in the work of the Catholic Communications Centre, Booterstown, Co Dublin, prior to being appointed as curate in Killarney.
In 1981, he came to work in Cork and was appointed curate at St. Patrick’s Parish, Lower Glanmire Road, where he served until 1988. (He was incardinated as a priest of the Cork and Ross diocese in 1986.) He then moved to Glanmire, where he served as curate. He retired in 1995 when his health failed.
In retirement, he resided at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mount Desert, Lee Rd., Cork, where he died.
