Mgr. Denis Hayes was 55 years of age when he died after an illness. He was well known throughout the Dioceses of Cork & Ross and beyond, having served as Diocesan Secretary for 12 years.
He was a native of The Lough parish in Cork and was ordained in 1966.
His first appointment was to St. Finbarr’s Seminary, Farranferris, Cork, where he taught until 1980. He was then assistant secretary at the diocesan offices for one year until 1981 when he was appointed Diocesan Secretary and Chancellor of the dioceses.
During his term as Diocesan Secretary he worked closely with Bishop Murphy and established the former bishop’s residence as a diocesan office.
He was appointed Papal Prelate with the title Monsignor in August 1985.
Mons. Hayes was also the Diocesan Director of Pilgrimages for many years and had been closely associated with the annual pilgrimages to Lourdes by people from the Dioceses of Cork and Ross.
He was appointed Parish Priest of Douglas parish in 1992.
He died on September 2nd, 1996.
