Your Word, O Lord, is a lamp for my steps and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
This is the first graduation of a group who completed the two year Diocesan Certificate in Biblical Studies. The thirty graduates came from thirteen different parishes in the diocese of Cork and Ross. The group received Diocesan Certificates signed by Bishop John Buckley of Cork and Ross. Bishop Buckley who was unable to attend because of commitments in Maynooth sent a letter congratulating the group and said that he was delighted to hear that the course had been a huge success and that there had been so much interest in it.
The graduation evening began with a liturgy of the Word followed by the presentation of certificates by Fr. Charles Conroy. In his speech he quoted St. Jerome who said “For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the person who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”
Cork Scripture Group was formed about three years ago to promote Scripture in the Cork area. Following a number of meetings we decided to run a two year Introduction to the Bible Course. We have aimed at having the highest possible standard of lectures while keeping the cost as low as possible. The voluntary committee consists of Lorna Downey, Fr. Ben Hegarty OP, Marian Mortell, Phil Mortell and Fr. Sean O’Sullivan.
The course consisted of four modules each of six weeks duration and covered an introduction to the Bible, an introduction to the Old Testament, The Gospels and the Early Church and the Letters of St. Paul. We supplemented each module with a Saturday workshop which we opened to the public. We were delighted to get the support of Scripture scholars in the Cork area. Our presenters included Mons. Ned Goold, Rev Prof Charles Conroy, Dr Siobhan Dowling-Long, Fr John Newman as well as all of the members of the committee. For our Saturday workshops we invited Dr Jessie Rogers, Sean Brennan, Diane Corkery and Dr. Kieran O’Mahony will present our next workshop on the Book of Revelation in March 2015.
A second course is running in Dunmanway (West Cork) and it is hoped that this group will graduate in Spring 2015.
We are glad to announce that a further Cork course (based in Scala, Blackrock) will begin in Spring 2015 and with the blessing of Bishop William Crean of Cloyne will welcome participants not just from Cork and Ross but also from Cloyne Diocese. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the course they can contact email@example.com
